Messy, Beautiful, and Real - Healing and Emotional Resilience Through Art

ree

Sometimes words just aren’t enough. You can talk about your pain, analyze your patterns, and unpack your childhood—but still feel like your body is carrying the weight of it all.

That’s what I explored in this week’s episode of You Have the Power with Mindful Arts Therapist Susan Day—and it might just change the way you think about healing.

When Talking Isn’t Enough

Susan shared something powerful: We’ve been expressing ourselves through art since we were drawing on cave walls. Long before we had language, we had symbols, color, and movement. Art is one of the body’s oldest forms of communication—and one of the most underused tools for healing.

For women who’ve been told they’re “too much,” who’ve been shamed for their emotions or trained to “stay strong,” this kind of nonverbal expression can feel revolutionary. Art therapy bypasses the constant need to explain or justify. You don’t have to have the right words. You don’t even have to be good at it. You just have to show up—and let whatever needs to come out, come out.

Why Creativity Heals

Susan described it simply: Art therapy builds emotional resilience. When you create something—even if it’s messy, imperfect, or strange—you’re teaching your nervous system that expression is safe.

That act of creation becomes practice for life:

  • When you make a mistake and keep working through it, you’re building persistence.

  • When you choose colors or shapes based on emotion, you’re practicing self-awareness.

  • When you finish something that once intimidated you, you’re reclaiming joy and confidence.

And that joy, Susan reminded us, isn’t just about feeling good. It’s empowering. It gives you the energy to keep moving forward.

For Women Who Don’t Fit the Mold

One of my favorite parts of this conversation was our discussion about women who don’t “fit in”—the outspoken, intense, high-achieving women who are often misunderstood. Susan said something that stuck with me:

“Why should you fit in? Conforming can be horribly constrictive to your energy and purpose.”

Art therapy invites you to express who you are without apology. It’s not about creating a masterpiece—it’s about creating space for your truth.

Healing Is Messy—and That’s Okay

Susan described her sessions as quiet, grounded, and deeply personal. Sometimes clients paint. Sometimes they scribble. Sometimes they just breathe and feel the texture of a crayon in their hand. The point isn’t the outcome—it’s the process.

Healing, like art, is messy. You can’t erase every mistake or paint over every scar. But you can keep working on it. You can add new layers. You can create something real and beautiful from where you are right now.

And that’s the real art of emotional resilience.
