When Speaking Truth Feels Dangerous — and Why You Must Do It Anyway

There’s a high cost to silence.
We don’t talk about it often, but secrets make us sick — emotionally, mentally, even physically. They create depression, anger, anxiety, and disconnection. And for too many of us, they start early.
I learned young that speaking the truth could be dangerous. When I told my father I was going to tell my teacher about what he was doing to me, he threatened me. My mother accused me of lying. The people who were supposed to protect me were the ones silencing me.
That’s how early conditioning begins — not just for me, but for so many women. We learn that love can be lost when we speak truth. That silence keeps the peace. That survival requires self-abandonment.
And while it might feel “safe” in the moment, it’s not peace — it’s suppression.
The Cost of Protecting the Abuser
When my mother told me not to say anything about her best friend’s husband molesting me because it would “destroy her marriage,” I carried that silence like it was mine to bear.
And that’s what many of us do. We protect the people who hurt us. We protect the systems that failed us. We protect the illusion that everything’s fine — while slowly losing ourselves in the process.
The truth is, these patterns don’t stop when we leave our childhood homes. They show up in our workplaces, our friendships, and even our romantic relationships.
I’ve spoken up in professional settings when something didn’t feel right — and I was punished for it. Blacklisted. Denied promotions. Silenced again.
It’s the same dynamic, just dressed in business casual. When we threaten control, control retaliates.
Religion, Control, and the Disguised Obedience
In the last podcast episode with Brooke Kekos, we talked about how religion and narcissistic abuse mirror each other — how both rely on obedience, emotional manipulation, and fear to maintain control.
My own experiences in church showed me the same thing. I watched as girls were shamed for getting pregnant. I saw leadership use lighting cues and staged emotion to manufacture “spiritual experiences.” And I remember my youth pastor becoming angry when my ex-husband simply asked questions.
If your belief system can’t withstand curiosity, it’s not faith — it’s control.
That’s what happens in families, churches, and corporations alike. Any environment that punishes truth is worshipping power, not authenticity.
Deconstructing Old Systems
I want to be clear — not all churches are bad. Not all men are bad. But there are systems that were built to keep women small.
Historically, women were dependent on men for survival — financially, socially, and even spiritually. That dependency became a power dynamic that justified silencing. And it still shows up today when women are told they’re “too much,” “too emotional,” or “too ambitious.”
The rise of empowered women isn’t the fall of men. It’s an invitation for men to evolve.
To stop demonizing women for taking up space, and start examining how patriarchy has kept them disconnected from emotional maturity and accountability.
The Embodiment of Trust
Six months ago, in my conversation with Brooke, I talked about learning to trust again. But since then, I’ve realized something deeper — trust isn’t something you give. It’s something you earn.
Today, I don’t hand my trust to people just because they ask for it. I watch. I listen. I slow down. I let their actions show me who they are.
That’s what embodied discernment looks like — trusting your nervous system more than someone else’s story.
It’s not guardedness; it’s groundedness.
Sovereignty and Truth
Speaking truth can be hard. It can cost you comfort, relationships, even belonging. But silence costs you something far greater — your sovereignty.
You might lose people who prefer the quiet version of you. But you’ll gain yourself. And that’s the kind of peace you don’t have to perform for.
So if your body feels that pull — that “this is my time” moment — follow it. You’re not asking for too much. You’re just no longer willing to accept too little.
Because the truth is:
Truth may cost you your comfort, but silence costs you your sovereignty. And I choose sovereignty every time.
